Have you ever struggled to hold onto a job, home, romance or goal that just is not working out as you prefer? There can be times when despite our best efforts, at least for the present; we need to accept a situation that is disappointing.
The expression “To go belly up” usually refers to a person or business that has reached a stage of financial distress or bankruptcy. Here at Body Aware Grieving, we are using this term to help ourselves stay relaxed and optimistic any time there are aspects of our lives that we cannot change.
As a healing technique, the “action” of purposely ‘going belly up’ is simple: choose a pleasurable way to lie on your back. The point is to put oneself into a physical position which can feel vulnerable and exposed, and surrender to the idea that for the moment you have done what you can regarding a problem you are currently upset about.
Examples of ways to go ‘belly up’ on purpose include:
**Lying on a beach, in a hammock or grassy lawn on a sunny mild day
**Find water to relax in comfortably, like a pool, lake, hot tub (maybe use an inner tube or other device that helps people float)
**A sensual time either alone, or with a person you trust, where it is OK to just lie on ones back and enjoy the experience.
**Going to the slides at a water park or sledding down a snowy hill would be active forms of ‘going belly up’
**Get a professional massage, or do a trade with a friend
The point is to begin to feel more powerful by choosing to be in a position that is open and potentially vulnerable. Our hope is to remind ourselves that we cannot always control the circumstances around us. Sometimes by accepting what we cannot change, we become more relaxed and begin to create opportunities that are difficult to see when we are upset.
