The suicide section of Body Aware Grieving has two main purposes. We want to create an on-line community devoted to helping one another heal from deaths due to suicide. Additionally we intend to discuss ways to reduce the number of people who are feeling suicidal.
Mourning a death resulting from suicide can bring up many complicated feelings and questions. Along with the other strong feelings related to losing a loved one, it is common to ask oneself: What more could have been done to prevent this death? Which signs did I miss? How could he or she have done this to me?
Hopefully we can together begin to find answers to some of our shared concerns. What CAN we do to lower the levels of desperation and feelings of loneliness that can lead to suicidal tendencies? How can we learn more from people who remain resilient, full of life and strong-willed even during stressful times? Is it possible to keep life challenges like needing to recover after a divorce or job loss from turning into a desire to actually kill oneself?
Since isolation and feelings of hopelessness seem to increase the likelihood of suicidal behavior…let’s create more community and projects that provide us with a sense of shared purpose. My hope is that we can be practical, kind and wise and together find ways to help more people feel well-cared for, productive and optimistic.
How can we begin to heal from our losses? What does it mean to be “full of life”?
Can we invent more emotional and logistical safety nets for ourselves so life does not seem so scary?
